Abstract

In making porous metal bodies for bearing bushes, packing-rings, and the like by compressing and sintering spongy iron particles, the pressure may be exerted by filling into a hollow flexible cover which is exposed to hydraulic pressure. ALSO:Porous metal bodies for bearing bushes, packing-rings, and the like are made by compressing and sintering spongy iron particles of a size and porosity corresponding in a loosely poured state to a specific gravity of 1-1,5, without admixture of a bonding metal, the specific gravity of the pressed and sintered product being 4,5-5,5. The size of the original particles may be 1/20 -3 mm., and they may be obtained by disintegrating spongy iron ingots by cutting or tearing without crushing. The spongy iron may be produced from iron ore or by the reduction of waste iron oxide by means of a reducing gas, the reduced iron particles being sintered together under the action of their own weight. The pressure may be exerted from several directions, e.g. by means of upper and lower punches moving into a die from opposite directions; or the particles may be filled into a hollow flexible cover which is exposed to hydraulic pressure. Sintering may be effected at 1200 DEG C. in a reducing or non-oxidizing atmosphere for up to 2 hours. Pores on those parts of the surfaces not exposed to friction may be closed by solder, tin, copper oxide, powdered copper, metal precipitated from a salt solution, or artificial resin or other varnishes.
