Abstract

A brake shoe, drum, or disc is formed by compressing and sintering a mixture containing Fe powder, from 2 to 15 per cent by weight of powdered frictional material selected from asbestos, talc, feldspar and apatite, and P or a reducible phosphorus compound in such amount that the sintered braking means contains 0.1 to 2.5 per cent by weight of P. The phosphorus compound may be ferro-phosphorus or a phosphate of Fe or of the alkali or alkaline earth metals; or red phosphorus may be used. The Fe amounts preferably to 80 to 95 per cent by weight of the mixture and up to 10 per cent Cu may also be present. The mixture is compressed to the desired shape (e.g. 8 tons per sq. cm.) and sintered under reducing conditions, e.g. in hydrogen, at between 1050 DEG C. (the eutectric Fe-P melting point) and 1300 DEG C. Up to 2 per cent of lubricant such as zinc stearate and graphite may also be used in the mixture.
