Abstract

518,267. Porous metal bodies. TIETIG, C. Aug. 15, 1938, No. 24032. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1937. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups V and XXI] In a process for making porous metal objects such as bullets, bearings, and bushings, finelydivided metal powder is mixed with an easilyreducible metal oxide; the object is formed from the mixture under high pressure, and is sintered in a reducing atmosphere while its shape is preserved. The oxide may comprise the oxides of copper, tin, zinc, cadmium, and lead (including white-lead) and the metals may be copper, tin, and zinc. Up to 6 per cent. of a lubricant such as oil, graphite, or aluminium may be included. The powdered starting materials should pass through a 200-mesh screen, the forming-pressure may be 12,000- 25,000 lbs. per square inch, and the sintering should take place at a temperature not exceeding 1,700‹C., in hydrogen or natural or artificial city-gas. The object may be machined. before or after being impregnated with hot or cold lubricant, the impregnation being effected, if desired, under reduced pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to silver as one of the constituents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
