Abstract

A vinyl resin is used as the basis of a transfer ink adapted to be released from a paper base and rendered adhesive by the application of heat and pressure so as to produce a tough flexible marking on articles which have to resist abrasion and distortion such as tennis balls, conveyer belts &c. In order to regulate the fusibility, cellulose derivatives or the like, or plasticizers such as butyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphate, or butyl phthalate may be added. To facilitate stripping of the backing after application to the article to be decorated, there may be added a lubricant which is not completely dissolved in the composition when cold, e.g. an oil or wax, a soap such as magnesium oleate or triethanolamine stearate, oleate, or linoleate, or a fatty acid such as stearic or oleic acid; also a smooth impervious paper such as glassine is used. Dyes, pigments, &c. metallic powders may also be added. According to examples, the following mixtures are employed: (a) a vinyl resin known as Mowilith N, tricresyl phosphate, ultramarine blue; (b) Mowilith N, butyl phosphate, cadmium red; (c) Mowilith N, cellulose nitrate, tricresyl or butyl phosphate, acetone, titanium dioxide; (d) Mowilith N, cellulose nitrate, tricresyl phosphate, magnesium oleate or triethanolamine stearate; (e) Mowilith NN, ethyl cellulose, tricresyl phosphate, triethanolamine linoleate, ultramarine blue; (f) a vinyl resin, benzyl cellulose, triethanolamine stearate, methyl abietate, cadmium selenide; (g) a resin known as "Vinylite" (Registered Trade Mark) 0-100, tricresyl phosphate, stearic acid, butyl carbitol, cadmium red or aluminium or gold bronze; (h) Mowilith NN, ethyl cellulose, tricresyl phosphate, magnesium oleate, gold or silver bronze.
