Abstract

495,650. Extruding coated rods, tubes, &c. NORTHERN ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., MAYES, J. H., and BRIGGS, C. F. May 20, 1937, No. 14068. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Extruded rods and wire are formed with an external coating and tubes with an internal and external coating by extruding a composite billet, both metals must however have substantially the same range of extrusion temperature, in the case of aluminium and its alloys from 450 to 500‹ C. The contacting surfaces must be clean and closely fitted and arranged to follow the flow lines during extrusion. The external coating metal 2 may take the form shown in Fig. 5, or that shown in Fig. 6, the maximum cross section of the metal being proximate to the extrusion die. In the case of a hollow billet a lining 5 of the coating metal may be fitted and in this case the maximum section is remote from the die. By varying the degree and regularity of the tapers the extruded articles may be given coatings varying in thickness.
