Abstract
In the synthesis of hydrocarbons the reaction gas is first passed over the catalyst at a rate below the full rate, and the flow is subsequently increased gradually or stepwise to the full value. An increased output can thus be obtained without overheating the catalyst, and the dimensions of the latter may be greater than usual, e.g. a layer six feet deep and 1 inch in diameter. In this case the flow may be 6 litres per hour for the first ten minutes increasing stepwise to 900 litres per hour after 2 1/2 hours. The flow should be so controlled that the temperature does not rise more than 30 DEG F. above the normal reaction temperature.
