Abstract
495,312. Ventilators. JOHNSTON, N. F., and MARSHALL, J. April 10, 1937, No. 10284. [Class 137] In the ball-and-socket type of air-directing ventilator, a socket 2 formed as a spider is located in an air duct 1, the ball member 4 being encircled by arms 3 of the socket, and by a locating plate 5. The ball member may be solid, and has two apertures 6, 7 in it at rightangles forming a passage 8, and is rotated by a knob 10 either to direct the air in the desired direction, or to cut off the air supply when the two apertures are both within the socket as shown in the dotted lines. A deflector 11 may be arranged in the passage 8. In Fig. 5, the ball member is provided with trunnions 13 supported in a trunnion bearing ring 17 loosely held in a groove between socket rings 14, 15. The part of the ball member between the two apertures is removed, forming a slot through which the air passes, and in which one or more deflectors 11 may be fitted. In Fig. 7, the ball member 4 is held in a ring 20 which forms one of a series of louvres or concentric directing vanes around the member 4, thus providing a directional air flow in addition to the diffused supply from the louvres. To shut off the air supply to the louvres, dampers 23, 23<1> mounted on hinges 24, 24<1> are connected by a link 26, and operated by a lever 27 and a cam 28 controlled by rotating a knob 29.
