Abstract

494,955. Regulating; supplying liquid fuel. ATTWOOD DIESEL EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd., GORDON, H., and.ATTWOOD, S. H. May 1, 1937, No. 12505. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] A self-contained unit for a fuelinjection system comprises a liquidpump speed governor X supplying fuel to, and regulating the delivery pressure of, a fuel-injection pump Y, which delivers fuel to the conduits 81 leading to the injectors by means of a fuel-distributing valve apparatus Z. The governor X is described in Specification 494,954, [Group XXIX], and comprises a series of rotary gear pumps 5, 6, 8 delivering fuel through a restricted orifice formed in a member 13, which is thereby slightly rotated against the force of an opposing spring. The fuel-injection pump Y is described in Specification 494,952, [Group XXVIII], and consists of a series of plungers 46 actuated by an eccentric 54, the fuel delivery being regulated automatically by rotation of the plungers 46 by means of a control ring 61, to which a rotary movement of adjustment is imparted (a) by the governor X acting through the member 13 and a cam plate 37 attached thereto, and (b) by a spring-pressed piston acted on by the pressure of the fuel being delivered by the plungers 46. The fuel-distributing apparatus Z is described in Specification 494,953, and comprises a series of valves 75 actuated by a pair of cams 93, 94. The timing of the commencement of injection is regulated by angular adjustment of the cams 93, 94 relatively to each other by axial movement of a manually-operated rod 103, carrying opposed helical gears 102 and 104, and the duration of injection is varied by angular adjustment of both cams 93, 94 together through the cam plate 37.
