494,736. Cooling and preheating furnace charges. MAcDONALD, J., and G. W. B. ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd. April 30, 1937, No. 12418. [Class 51 (ii)] A furnace installation for the heat treatment in a protective atmosphere of materials contained in retorts or boxes comprises a pittype furnace, a cooling-pit to which a retort may be transferred after heat treatment in the furnace, and arrangements by which the protective atmosphere can be circulated between this retort and another containing a cold charge to be preheated. The installation shown comprises a furnace 1 which may be electrically heated, a preheating pit 4, three cooling pits 5, 6, 7 and a pipe system 15, 16 with a fan 14<1> and branch leads 17 .. 20 having flexible portions 21 ... 24 by which retorts in the various pits can be connected to the system. By means of valves 25 .. 28 a retort in the preheating-pit 4 can be placed in communication with a retort in any one of the cooling-pits. In a modified installation the pipe system has two sets of branch leads, one for the pit 4 and the other for any one of the pits 5, 6, 7.
