Abstract
494,719. Silencing gaseous currents. BLANCHARD, J. G. April 26, 1937, Nos. 11921 and 30012. [Class 7 (ii)] An intake- or exhaust-silencer comprises a number of concentric inner and outer casings between which the gases travel circumferentially and a space or spaces in which vacua are formed by the ejector action of the gases. The construction comprises three concentric casings 1, 2, 12, air flowing from a series of inlet openings 18 through series of openings 19, 25 and the central tube 12 to the outlet 8. The annular spaces are divided by longitudinal baffles 16, 17, 20, 21, a vacuum being formed in the smaller spaces 9a, 23 which are open to the gaseous current through openings 14, 24. The tube 12 is provided with baffles 26 which have openings of progressively larger size towards the outlet. Felt linings 27 may be provided. In a modification the inner casing 2 has conical frusta 36, 37 Fig. 3, with short tubes 38, 39 extending within the cones and a tube 40 extending from an end compartment 11 through and beyond the cone 36. Vacua are formed in the cones and compartment 11 and in the blank end of the annular chamber 9. In a further modification a pair of silencer units comprising concentric casings 51, 52 is contained in a box 50, air entering at 60, flowing round the annular spaces 56 and leaving through an end compartment 59. The casings 51 are perforated so that vacua are formed in spaces 64 which may also contain sound absorbent material 66.
