Abstract

A process for the production of lubricating-oils consists in polymerizing or condensing liquid or solid unsaturated hydrocarbons of the aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic series by the aid of A1C13, in reaction vessels constructed of materials which do not exert an unfavourable catalytic influence on the reaction. Reaction vessels of Cr-coated iron, chromium, Cr-alloyed steels or Cr-Ni-alloyed steels are preferred. A1C13 containing less than 5 per cent of unsublimable residue is also preferred. In an example, 100 parts of the liquid mixture of olefines resulting from the cracking of soft paraffin wax in the gas phase at 530 DEG C. are placed in a vessel of steel containing 6 per cent of chromium, with 8 parts of A1C13. 200 Parts of a fraction of German crude mineral oil with a boiling point about 350 DEG C. which has been pretreated with a little A1C13 are then added and the mixture vigorously stirred at about 45 DEG C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into an NaC1 solution to destroy double compounds of A1C13 and hydrocarbons and, after removing the salt solution and sludge, the oil is washed, dried and fractionally distilled under a pressure of 1 mm. of mercury. In addition to 15 parts of first runnings, 255 parts of a good quality lubricating oil suitable for motor cars, is obtained. By removing the oil boiling up to 285 DEG C. by distillation, a residual oil of high flash point suitable for hot steam cylinder oil is obtained. Aromatic hydrocarbons may be similarly treated.ALSO:A process for the production of lubricating oils consists in polymerizing or condensing liquid or solid unsaturated hydrocarbons of the aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic series by the aid of AlCl3 in reaction vessels constructed of materials which do not exert an unfavourable catalytic influence on the reaction. Reaction vessels of Crcoated Fe, Cr, Cr-alloyed steels or Cr-Ni-alloyed steels are preferred. AlCl3 containing less than 5 per cent of unsublimable residue is also preferred. In an example, 100 parts of the liquid mixture of olefines resulting from the cracking of soft paraffin wax in the gas phase at 530 DEG C. are placed in a vessel of steel containing 6 per cent of Cr, with 8 parts of AlCl3. 200 Parts of a fraction of German crude mineral oil with a boiling point above 350 DEG C. which has been pretreated with a little AlCl3 are then added and the mixture vigorously stirred at about 45 DEG C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is poured into a NaCl solution to destroy double compounds of AlCl3 and hydrocarbons and, after removing the salt solution and sludge, the oil is washed, dried and fractionally distilled under a pressure of 1 mm. of Hg. Aromatic hydrocarbons may be similarly treated.
