Abstract
493,817. Printing-machines. HOE & CO., Ltd., R. Feb. 11, 1938, No. 4414. Convention date, Aug. 3,1937. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In a rotary intaglio printing-machine having a printing-cylinder extending into an ink fountain and a doctorblade reciprocable over and in contact with the cylinder, anti-splash means are provided to prevent ink from being flung from the ends of the cylinder comprising flanges extending over and out of contact with the end parts of the periphery of the cylinder and terminating at a point spaced from the edge of the doctor-blade contacting with the cylinder and additional parts located at the ends of the doctor-blade and reciprocable therewith and bridging the gap between the flanges and the doctor-blade. The printing-cylinder 12 is mounted to rotate in an enclosed ink reservoir or fountain 11, and is partly immersed in the ink therein. The doctor-blade mechanism shown is of the kind described in Specification 481,188, and the wiping-device 28 for the doctor-blade is of the kind described in Specification 481,035. To prevent ink adhering to the ends of the cylinder 12 from being throwm out of the machine on to adjacent parts, end plates 39 are provided, each having a flange 43 which overlies the adjacent end of the cylinder and extends from a pivoted cover member at one side of the cylinder to a point adjacent the doctor-blade 34. The end plates continue past the doctor-blade and into the reservoir 11. A block 44, preferably of hardened steel, is provided in the upper edge of each endplate in position to be engaged by the doctor-blade as it reciprocates, and to form with the cylinder 12, a substantially level surface upon which the blade may ride. The spaces left between the flanges 43 and the doctor-blade 34 at each end of the cylinder are covered by ink-guards 46 formed of strips of flexible material such as felt, synthetic rubber &c. Each ink-guard strip 46 is secured by clamps upon each end of the upper doctor-blade clamp 31, extends widthwise beyond the end of the blade, and is of such a length that it extends over the flange 43. A baffle 22 in the reservoir 11 acts upon the cylinder 12 to prevent an excess of ink from being carried forward by the latter.
