APPLICATION FILED JUNE I5 I916 1,238,326 Patented Aug. 28, 1917.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFTQE.
ALFRED I1. PARMELEE, OF LAMBERTVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 SEYMOUR B. GOODKIND, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
OFFSET-ERIN TING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. as, 1917.
Application filed. June 15, 1916. Serial No. 103,707.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. PARMELEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lambertville, Monroe county, Michigan, have invented new and useful ()ffsetPrinting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to copy multiplication.
This invention has utility when incorporated in printing presses for offset printing.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a press embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the roll train and shifting mechanism;
Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite end of the roll train showing the driving mechanism; and
Fig. at is a fragmentary view of the roll carrying a yieldable copy and the rigid offset roll with the second oflset roll.
The printing press is provided with the frame 1 carrying the feed table 2 and the roll train having the upper rotary inking fountain 3 and ink distributing rolls a, and 5, and a relatively yielding or composition roll 6, and two rigid faced rolls 7. The roll 8 carries the yieldable copy 9, which may be of gutta percha to form a definite copy of a yielding nature. This copy carrying roll 8 has its copy 9 transferred to the metal or rigid first offset roll 10, thereby giving a distinct impression upon a positive surface of maintained contour. This metal or rigid offset roll which may have an aluminum face, effects transfer of the design on the copy to the composition jacket 11 on the second offset roll 12. This allows one to use a copy on roll 9 of usual negative outline for the two offsets supply a positive transfer impression upon the paper or sheet material fed from the table 2 over the impression roll 13 to receive an impression from the composition blanket 11 on the second offset roll 12.
In this embodiment of the invention, the
copy is the replaceable element in the repetition of uses of the press, and, as it is a yielding or semi-yielding substance, and is replaceable, it is a contribution in the upkeep of the press for the first and second offset rolls are substantially permanent in this combination and grouped to stand up under continuous usage. This yielding face copy does not deteriorate the rigid face inking roll coacting therewith. The smooth hard inking roll, does not have the type embedded therein to cut the inking roll and blur the inking on the type. Further, there is no cutting or crumbling away of the inking roll to clog or fill in about the type. From this it follows a clear impression is readily maintained in long continued operation.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A yieldable copy roll, an inking roll, said rolls being of similar efiective diameter, driving means for said rolls, and a rigid faced follower roll therebetween whereby there may be a common peripheral speed for the inking, copy and follower rolls.
2. A yieldable copy roll, an inking roll, a rigid faced inloapplying roll coacting therebetween, and positive driving means for the inking roll and copy roll whereby the peripheral speed of said rolls is the same.
3. A rigid offset roll, a yieldable copy roll for transfer of the copy impression to said offset roll, and inking means for said copy roll including a rigid faced inking follower roll coactingv with the copy roll and driven at the effective peripheral speed of the copy roll.
4:. An inking train including a distributing roll, a rigid faced inking roll, a yieldable copy roll coacting with the rigid faced inking roll to drive said inking roll, and a rigid offset roll for receiving the impression from the yieldable copy roll.
In witness whereof I afiix my signature.
ALFRED L. PARMELEE.
