493,444. Furnace walls; slag screens ; gilled tubes for heat exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. April 2, 1937, No. 9382. Convention date, June 4, 1936. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] Transverse plates 24, Fig. 3, welded to a fluid - conducting tube for a furnace wall or slag screen are formed with slots or gaps 20, 26, which are spaced at considerably less than half the circumference of the tube to prevent stresses in the tube arising from the welding operation. The annular plates 34, Fig. 10, are slotted at their outer edges which are deformed between the slots to key refractory material surrounding the tubes. A doorway in the wall of a boiler furnace is formed by dividing the wall tubes and bending them outwards for connection to short headers above and below the doorway.
