[Class 138 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A transmission unit for connecting the wiperactuating shaft of a windscreen-cleaner to its remote source of power comprises a driving member and a driven member, one member being movable about an axis disposed substantially transversely of a path in which the companion member is adapted to be reciprocated, the members being joined together permanently by a ball-and-socket connection, one part of which is freely cast on to the other part. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a frame 1 supports a motor 10 provided with a drive shaft 11 having a crank member 12 equipped with one or more crank pins 13 adapted to be connected by one or more links 16 to one or more wiper-mounting units. Each unit comprises a wiper shaft 6 journalled in a support 7 which is detachably mounted in an opening 8 provided in the cowl 2 of a motor vehicle. The shaft 6 is adapted to be driven through a chain 36 and toothed gearing from a shaft 14 which has an integral crank 15 connected to the link 16. The link 16 is joined to each or either of the cranks 15, 12, by a ball-and-socket joint, such as is shown in Fig. 7. The crank 15 is cast integrally with the socket 18 on to the ball 22, which is covered with graphite prior to the casting. A felt disc 33 containing lubricant is placed between the socket 18 and the link 16. The link is secured to the ball 22 by swaging over a stem 23 provided on the ball. In a modification the wiper shaft is connected to the shaft 14 through a pinion and toothed sector.
