Abstract

493,000. Closets. GROENIGER, W. C. June 29, 1937, No. 18095. Convention date, July 8, 1936. [Class 26] In a water closet of the type comprising a bowl having a well and the upflow leg of a discharge siphon communicating with one side of the well, the flushing liquid is supplied in the form of jets, a water jet being directed tangentially to the inner face of the bowl above the well so as to impart a vortical motion to the contents of the upper part of the bowl, a main jet issuing at the side of the well opposite the upflow leg and being directed towards the mouth of the latter, and a further jet or jets issuing within the upflow passage and being directed upwardly therein, and water for the jets is supplied from a common source in such a way that the vortex jet is supplied first, and all the jets are arranged below the normal liquid level in the bowl. The closet comprises a bowl with an internal conical surface of two different decreasing radii, a well portion 12, a water-supply channel 22, Fig. 2, and upflow passage 15. Water from the channel 22 enters a rim channel 30, and thence a channel 35a, rim jets 28, and two channels 32, Fig. 4, arranged down the sides of the upflow passage and terminating in retroverted jets 32b at the bottom of the outflow channel and directed upwardly. From one of the channels 32 a branch leads to a vortex jet 33 arranged below the normal liquid level of the closet, and which may be directed downwardly. The rim channel 30 is provided with a downward extension 35b. When the flush commences, and while the extension 35b is filling up, water flows first from the jet 33, and then from the jets 32b. The water in the passage 15 thus starts to move, and the matter in the bowl is sucked into the passage 15, and is further impelled as the flow from the jet 35 commences. When the extension 35b is full, water flows from the jets 28, which are so inclined as to assist the vortical movement in the bowl. The extension 35b retains sufficient water to restore the seal when the flush is over. The area of the mouth 12b of the well 12 is less than the cross-sectional area of any point of the passage 15, to prevent clogging. The lowest portion 12a of the well is arranged within the mouth of the passage. The rim jets 28 are directed outwards against the wall of the basin and may be flattened at their outlet ends ; while the inlet ends may be funnelshaped. The closet is made of vitreous material, porcelain, or enamelled cast metal. The holes 28 may be made by drilling through from the top during manufacture. A supporting web 26 and attaching back-plate 27 are provided.
