Abstract

492,650. Regulating switches; gearing for driving two or more shafts. STRAND ELECTRIC & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and McKENZIE, R. A. Feb. 17, 1937, Nos. 4811/37 and 1154/38. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] The shafts operating each group or bank of resistances, reactances, or shutters forming dimmers for lamps are each coupled with a master shaft through electromagnetic friction clutches whereby, on selective excitation of the clutches, a given motion of the master shaft produces movement of any dimmer shaft in one direction or the other. In the arrangement shown, the master shaft 1 may be rotated in either direction by gearing 2, 3 so as to move the links 11, 12 oppositely up or down. The links are coupled to dimmer shafts 4, 5; 6 through electromagnetic friction clutches 7, 8 which are independently operated as required to secure actuation of any of the dimmer shafts in either direction. The movement of the clutches is in this construction limited to 180‹, but in alternative constructions, the master and other shafts may rotate continuously, chain and toothed gearing being employed in one construction and bevel gearing in another. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 373,625 and 377,363.
