Abstract

Lead, mercury, or silver are extracted from ores or other materials containing sulphides thereof, it may be selectively, by lixiviation with a neutral or weakly acid dilute aqueous solution of a ferric salt, such as the nitrate, acetate, or borate, adapted to form a salt with the metal to be extracted which is soluble in cold water. Sulphur is set free and precipitated. Examples relate to the treatment of a mercury sulphide ore and of a complex zinc lead ore. In the latter case, zinc sulphide remains undissolved. In an example, a ferric nitrate solution is circulated in countercurrent through a complex zinc lead ore, and the lead nitrate-ferrous nitrate solution electrolysed in a cell with lead cathodes and graphite anodes using a high current density and efficient circulation. Crystalline lead is deposited and the ferric nitrate solution reformed recirculated through the ore. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the extraction of metals other than lead, silver, and mercury whose chlorides are insoluble or only slightly soluble in cold water, and includes examples of extracting ores containing metallic silver and mercury. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
