492,618. Bearing bushes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 11, 1937; No. 16235. Convention date, June 11, 1936. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A method of making a bearing unit consisting of a porous metal bushing 10 fixed in an outer metal sleeve 11 comprises fitting the bushing into the sleeve and then heating the assembled unit to alloy the bushing to the sleeve. The bushing 10 is formed by briquetting metal powders, e.g. a mixture of copper, tin, and graphite, and the sleeve 11 may be of brass, bronze, or steel. In the latter case the inner bore of the steel sleeve is plated with a thin coating of tin, copper, or other alloy which will bond to the porous metal bush under heat. The resulting bearing unit can be very tightly pressed in the bore 15 of a supporting member 16 without danger of reducing the inside diameter of the porous metal bushing.
