Abstract

492,280. Moulding expanded cement. WITHEROW, W. P. March 16, 1937, No. 7690. Convention date, April 2, 1936. [Class 87 (ii)] Expanded cement bricks, slabs, &c. are formed by pouring a cement mix capable of expansion into a trough and subdividing the mix by inserting a bottomless gang mould before expansion of the mix is complete. The mix may comprise Portland or Lumnite cement and an expanding, agent such as aluminium powder. The trough 2 rests on a curing tank 3 filled with water heated by steam pipes 6. The whole is enclosed by a cover 5. The gang mould comprises side walls or partitions 7 which are separated by end spacers or walls 8 and clamped together by bolts 9 passing through inclined slots 11, Fig. 6. Springs 10, extending through holes in the walls 8, tend to separate the walls 7 when the bolts 9 are released. The mould is lifted from the trough by elevating means 14. A plate 15, Fig. 8, which covers most of the mould space, is placed on the mix to produce a substantially level surface and completely fill the mould. The excess material at the edges can be sawn off. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a method of moulding expanded cement containing coarse aggregates in which a gauge box is filled with the mix which is then poured into gang moulds so that each mould receives the exact quantity necessary to expand and fill it. The moulds may also have slidable end spacers to vary the size of the moulds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
