Abstract
Aliphatic acids are produced by the oxidation by means of oxidizing gases of hydrocarbons which have been produced by hydrogenation of oxides of carbon for instance by the Fischer process. The oxidation may be effected in the presence of catalysts such as heavy metal salts of unsaturated acids of the type CnH2n-xO2 in which n is greater than 15 and x is greater than 5. In an example the initial hydrocarbon has a boiling-point above 250 DEG C. and the oxidation is effected at 115 DEG C. by means of air in the presence of a catalyst. The product contains stearic, palmitic, myristic, lauric, and capric acids. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited in respect of the boiling-point of the hydrocarbon to be oxidized but states that the melting-point of the hydrocarbon is preferably not above 50 DEG C. A table is given comparing the oxidation products of these hydrocarbons with the oxidation products of compounds produced by the hydrogenation of carbon. As oxidation catalysts there are mentioned compounds of metals such as manganese, nickel, vanadium, cobalt and calcium with oxygen such as per-compounds for instance potassium and sodium peroxides, potassium permanganate and salts of the metals mentioned with stearic, clupanedonic, oleic, and alkyl-sulphuric acids, and compounds of these metals with acetyl-acetone, acetoacetic ester and oximes. To reduce the quantity of oxy-carboxylic acid, the product of oxidation may be treated with dissolved or solid substances having an alkaline reaction in quantity far below that required for saponification. Six detailed examples are given, in two of which manganese clupanedonate, in one cobalt stearate and manganese peroxide, and in one potassium permanganate are used as catalysts. Specification 255,818, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 467,328.
