Abstract
491,629. Grinding railway wheels. PILZ, W. Oct. 20, 1937, No. 28538. Convention date, July 20. [Class 60] The two wheels 1 and 2 of a railway-vehicle axle 18 are ground by a single grinding appliance, the axis of which is perpendicular to the axle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the treads of the two wheels, rotated slowly between centres, are ground simultaneously by the side edges of grinding segments 7 carried by a disc 6 driven by an electric motor. The shaft 8 of the disc is journalled in a headstock 9 adjustable on a slide 12. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the disc is replaced by an endless band carrying grinding bodies 13 and running over wheels 14, 15. In a form for grinding the outer peripheries of the wheel flanges, a disc 17, Fig. 5, carrying the grinding member 21, is journalled in a slide 16 movable at right-angles to the axle 18 on a slide 20 movable parallel to the axle 18, the slide 16 being constrained by a roller thereon engaging a fixed guide 19. Thus, as the slide 16 is moved, the grinding member 21 is moved to and fro past the two wheel flanges in succession at the angle determined by the guide 19. Such movement prevents the formation of ridges &c.
