Abstract
491,549. Controlling aircraft. PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and EMERY, G. A. ST.-C. May 18, 1937, No. 13849. [Class 4] Means for operating an angularly-movable aircraft control-surface 4 include a link 7 pivoted at one end directly to a horn 5 and supported between its ends by guide means allowing combined sliding and angular swinging motion, the link carries a cam follower 15 co-operating with a cam on a member rotatably-mounted on a part relative to which the surface 4 is angularly movable. As shown, a trimming tab 4 is pivoted near the trailing edge of the elevator 1 and is operated by the link 7 selectively positioned on the horn 5 and guided on the journal of a pulley 1. The pulley 11 is rotated by a cable passing through flexible sheaths and moves the link through an anti-friction roller engaging a cam slot 14 in the pulley. The slot may be of evolute form and be designed such that the control is irreversible. The link 7 may be forked and rollers on the link may engage grooves on both sides of the pulley. The control system may be applied to the control of flaps, main control-surfaces, trimmable tailplanes and servo-surfaces. In the case of a balancing tab, the control may be arranged such that the tab is moved concurrently with displacement of the control-surface.
