Abstract

Polymerization products of unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated in two stages, in the first of which organic sulphur compounds are destroyed. The first stage is preferably effected with a catalyst immune from sulphur poisoning such as a metal of the 8th group, but alternatively a catalyst which has been partly poisoned by previous use in the second stage may be used. The catalyst used in the second stage may be liable to sulphur poisoning as, e.g. nickel, or immune as, e.g. the sulphides of 6th group metals. The first stage is preferably effected in a number of converters in parallel, and the second stage in a single converter. Between the stages impurities may be removed by washing with water or alkali. The reactions may be carried out in liquid or gaseous phase with or without increased pressure and usually at temperatures of 170-350 DEG C. The catalysts may be rigidly arranged, mounted on carriers, or suspended. Examples are given of the conversion of di-isobutylene into iso-octane using nickel catalysts. Specification 315,439, [Class 1 (i)], is referred to.ALSO:Polymerization products of unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated in two stages, in the first of which organic sulphur compounds are destroyed.
