[Class 83 (iii)] In a face-milling cutter with inserted blades, a body 10 has an uncut annular rim portion 10<1> and the end face is slotted at 18 to accommodate crosswise tapered blades 11 arranged so that longitudinal movement of the blades effects adjustment both of the face cutting edges 23 and the side cutting edges 25. The inclination of the slots gives a rake angle 19, Fig. 1, and the slots are tapered to the same degree as the blades perpendicularly to the inclined end surface 16. The rear wall of each slot has serrations 21 in the direction of the taper and the blades have complementary serrations 22. The blades are tapped into position from the position shown at 11a, Fig. 3, and then the cutting edges 23 ... 25 are formed. To remove the blades, pins 27 are driven against the blades through apertures 26 in the body. When the blades are adjusted outwardly by the pitch of the serrations, the adjustment a of the edge 25 which is subject to the greatest wear is considerably greater than the adjustment b of the face edge, the proportions being variable by varying the blade inclination. The large central recess 12 provides a clearance space for chips.
