Abstract

Higher halogenated aliphatic ketones are prepared by treating the monohalogenated ketone at a temperature below its boiling point with a halogen. A catalyst such as light may be utilized. The monohalogenated ketone may be prepared by treating the ketone vapour at a temperature below the boiling point of the product with a counter-current of halogen blown through a capillary as described in Specification 474,922 for the halogenation of hydrocarbons. In examples: (1) bromine is introduced into monobromacetone while cooling and stirring. The product is distilled under reduced pressure giving dibromacetones and some more highly brominated products; (2) monochloracetone is treated with chlorine at 30-40 DEG C. to yield mainly trichloracetones. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of: (1) a mixture of penta- and tetrachloracetones obtained by chlorination of monochloracetone at 50-70 DEG C.; (2) hexachloracetone obtained by chlorinating monochloracetone at 50-100 DEG C. and about 50 atmos.
