Abstract

489,428. Electron mirrors. NICOLL, F. H. Dec. 24, 1936, No. 35357. [Class 39 (i)] A mirror comprises a positively biassed tubular, preferably cylindrical, electrode and, more remote from the source, an electrode so biassed that a zero equipotential surface is formed in the neighbourhood of the end of the tubular electrode. The second electrode may be a cylinder, or may be a plate constituting the equipotential surface ; the shape of the plate may be determined experimentally. In an image converter, as shown, the mirror comprises cylinders 6, 7 whereby the image produced at a photo-electric screen 4 is reproduced on a fluorescent screen 8. A magnetic focusing coil 9 may be provided. In an iconoscope, the screen 8 is a mosaic with a signal plate and a screen screening it from the photo-cathode 4. It may be scanned obliquely or axially. In the latter case the mirror 6, 7 constitutes the focusing lens for the scanning beam. In a measuring tube or electron microscope, the beam passes through an aperture in the fluorescent screen and is reflected by the mirror upon the screen. The dimensions and potentials of the electrodes are chosen experimentally to remove aberration and to correct for pin-cushion or barrel distortion.
