Abstract

Cyanide-cadmium electroplating baths are prepared containing as an addition agent a product obtained by reacting an aliphatic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic compound containing an aldehydic or ketonic group with ammonia, an amine or an alkali metal cyanide. Suitable reactants, including those specified in the examples, include as aldehydes-acetaldehyde, aldol, crotonaldehyde, paraldol, propionaldehyde, acrolein, a -ethyl-p-propyl acrolein, butyraldehyde, citrol, citronellal, hexadecoic aldehyde, iso-butyraldehyde, furfural, benzaldehyde, anisic aldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde and glucose; ketones-acetone, light or heavy acetone oil, diethyl ketone, di-iso-amyl ketone, di-iso-butyl ketone, diethyl ketone, methyl n-propyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone and diacetyl; ammonia or amines-gaseous or aqueous ammonia, mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine; cyanides-sodium cyanide. The products may be hydrogenated, oxidized, sulphurized or halogenated, the method indicated in the examples involving the use of zinc dust and alkali, hydrogen peroxide, sodium or potassium permanganate or hydrogen sulphide. Examples of plating baths (12 to 20, 38 and 43) are given containing cadmium oxide and sodium cyanide with or without the addition of sodium sulphate and cobalt or nickel sulphate.
