488,983. Mechanical toys. SCHMID, M. Jan. 13, 1938, No. 1173. [Class 132 (iii)] A steering device for toy vehicles comprises hand-actuated clutch mechanisms which engage or disengage each of the driving wheels. A spring motor drives the wheels f, g through a pinion c and clutch members l which engage in apertures k in the wheels f, g which are loosely mounted on the shaft d and secured against displacement by springs h, i. Rotation of the steering wheel moves the rack q, the end r of which pushes the driving wheel g against its spring i so that the pins l no longer engage the apertures k. The wheel g then comes to rest and the vehicle turns until rotation of the steering wheel re-engages the drive.
