Abstract

488,358. Tools. KNOWLSON, R. F., LAISE, C. A., and McLEOD, R. G. Jan. 6, 1938, No. 421. [Class 83 (iii)] A tool for lathes, shapers, slotters, or the like has a hard metal bit 2 brazed to a shank 3 with the interposition of a layer of metal or alloy 4 which when in situ provides separate openended air or liquid ducts separating the bit from the shank. In one form, Fig. 1, the bit is directly brazed along the line 2 and the separating layer consists of fine-bore copper tubing welded toegether at 5 before use. In a modification, Fig. 3, a copper separating-strip may be grooved at 6 on the side adjacent the shank to provide the required passages or the grooves may be formed in the shank or in the bit and a plain copper strip used. In a further modification, the strip may have grooves on both sides so that both the shank and the bit complete the passage walling.
