[Class 46] In a filter-press, for filtering and drying clay or other material, of the type comprising single filter plates which are hollow or formed with interior passages for heating medium, whereby with the aid of vacuum the pressed cakes of material are dried, the vacuum is also applied to the liquid material, during filtering, by way of ports connecting the filtering chambers to a. filtrate outlet leading to a sealed vacuum chamber of relatively large capacity which is interposed between the vacuum unit and the filtrate outlet. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of the filter-press, Figs. 4 and 6 show alternate filter plates, and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken, respectively, on planes indicated by line 2-2, Fig. 4, and line 3-3, Fig. 6. Filter plates a alternated with frames b are hollow to receive steam which can enter by inlet d, from a pipe e, being discharged through outlet f to a pipe g. The liquid clay or other material enters the press by a central opening c, being fed by an air compressor m through a sealed pressure chamber n and through a feed pipe o. A vacuum unit p is connected to the filtrate outlet k through a sealed chamber q and a pipe r. The unit p de-aerates the clay or other material during filtering, and also acts in conjunction with steam in the plates a, to dry the filtered material. Drying may be partly effected with the aid of compressed air supplied to the filter-press from the compressor m by way of pipe v, and hence by different paths under the control of valves. The air may be passed through pipes v, v<1> and central feed opening c to the filtered material, and be discharged to pipe r through ports l and outlet k, and through ports z and outlet w. Alternatively, the air may be passed through pipes v, t and ports x to the filtered material and be discharged, as before, through ports z and outlet w. The outlet w branches into the pipe r. As a further alternative, the air may be admitted through pipes v, u and ports y to opposite sides of each cake of filtered material, and be discharged through both outlets k, w. In the method employing compressed air for drying purposes, the clay or other material is first filtered, pressed, and de-aerated, then partly dried by means of compressed air, and finally completely dried by the combined action of steam and vacuum.
