Filter-presses. -Relates to filter-presses for filtering sugar-cane juice &c. and of the kind wherein alternate cells and filtering-plates are clamped together by hydraulic pressure, and consists mainly in the combination therein of plates 41 and cells 25 having internally arranged bosses provided with apertures which form longitudinal passages 26, 30 for the liquid and are connected by multiple side passages 28, 29 with the interior of the cells 25, and of ribbed surfaces on the plates to which are secured by wire fastenings wire screens 16 which support the filtering-cloths 17. The plates are provided with longitudinal outlets 49 on both sides, and the filtrates from the two faces of each plate 41 are led separately by passages 43, 44, Figs. 9 and 10, to the respective outlets 49. Sight-glasses 52 are arranged between the passages and the outlets to allow any leakage to be readily detected and located, and valves 53 enable the faulty section to be cut out without interfering with the remainder of the press. Single lengths of filtering-cloth 17 are folded over the two faces of each plate 41. The outlets 49 of the plates register with the apertures 30 in the cells 25 to form ducts running through the whole length of the press to pipes 72, 73, Fig. 3, leading to a discharge pipe 80. The ducts 26 in the other corners of the press form inlets, being fed by supply pipes 74, 70, 71, Fig. 3. When first filling the press, a cock 76 is closed and an air vent 77 opened, so that the liquid enters only by the inlet 70, and air is expelled through the pipe 71. To wash out the cakes remaining in the cells 25 after filtration, cocks 82, 84 are closed and cocks 83, 86 opened, and steam or water is passed by a pipe 85 and the pipe 73 into the press and leaves by the pipe 72 and a pipe 81. The pairs of inlet and outlet ducts through the press may be arranged in opposite, instead of in adjacent, corners. The sections of the press are provided with wheels such as 92 running on horizontal rails 13, the wheels on the head of the press being also provided with hand-wheels 93.
