Abstract

487,973. Sharpening knives &c. STANLEY, A. J. March 8, 1937, No. 6787. Addition to 475,216. [Class 60] In a knife-sharpening &c. machine as described in the parent Specification, the adjusting means comprising the right- and left-handed screwed spindle and the associated nuts are enclosed in a casing to prevent access of abrasive dust to those parts. The machine comprises a table 1 on the top 1b of which are pivotally mounted, in lugs 2, the tubular bodies carrying the grinding-wheels x, driven by the electric motor 10. Across the table is cast a lug 11, which is bored axially and screwed at its ends to receive plugs 12 forming bearings for the spindle 14 having thereon right- and lefthanded threads 15, 16. Slidable in the bore of the lug are two nuts 19 engaging the threads and each provided with a pin 20 projecting through a slot 21 in the lug to engage each with a slot 22 in an arm 23, each arm being secured to one of the lugs 4 of the tubular members. The spindle 14 is rotated, to adjust the grinding-wheels x, by a knob 24, and the nuts 19 are of such length as always to close the slots 21. A felt washer 25 is provided on the end of the spindle 14, and axial movement of the spindle is prevented by a screw 18a, which engages a groove 18 in a collar 17 on the spindle.
