the drawing as embodying in a preferred form the several features of the invention, is of the general type which consists of an inner sleeve member to which one of the grinding wheels is secured, and an outer sleeve member to which the other of the grinding wheels is secured mounted upon and axially adjustable with relation to the inner sleeve member. A feature of the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the sleeve members in which a finished screw thread is provided on the outer periphery of the inner sleeve member, and the outer sleeve member is formed with a portion of its inner periphery threaded for engagement with the screw threads of the inner sleeve member, and with another portion of its inner periphery fitted for sliding engagement with the finished outer surfaces of the screw threads. Further in accordance with the invention, for locking the outer sleeve member rigidly in its adjusted position on the inner sleeve, applicant provides a ring locking member which is keyed to, and is slidable axially upon the finished thread surfaces of the inner sleeve member, and is provided on one face thereof with toothed clutching elements for engagement with corresponding recesses formed in the outer sleeve member. A locking nut screw-threaded to the inner sleeve serves to force the ring locking member against the outer sleeve so that the inner and outer sleeves are rigidly secured to turn as a single unit.

The grinding wheel sleeve assembly which forms the subject-matter of the present invention, is intended for use with a cylindrical grinding machine for the performance of relief grinding operations upon the two faces of a milling 'cutter. In the performance of a grinding operation of this character, it is proposed that the work piece will be positioned between the grinding, wheels, and will be moved relatively to the grinding wheel sleeve assembly to cause the rotational axes of the grinding wheel assembly and of the work piece to be shifted between alternate angular positions with relation to one another to cause each face of the work piece to be brought successively into the proper angular relation to the associated grinding wheel for the performance of a relief grinding operation thereon. A machine adapted for the performance of a grinding operation of this character is disclosed in the copending application of Mandeville and Lalime, for improvements in grindin machines, filed of even date herewith.
It has been found particularly desirable that the spacing between the two grinding wheels be maintained substantially constant, and that pro-' vision be made for adjustment in the relative axial position of the grinding wheels to compensate for such wear as may occur on the complementary grinding faces of the two wheels. In order that each of the'succeeding relief grinding operations may be properly performed, it is essential that a true alignment of the grinding wheels on their rotational axis be maintained for all positions of relative axial adjustment of the grinding wheels.

A feature of applicants improved construction consists in the provision of an inner sleeve member having a finished screw thread extending along the greater part of its length, and an outer sleeve member of relatively short length which combines therein separate nut and sleeve bearing elements, so that the outer sleeve member is adjustable along the greater portion of the length of the inner sleeve member, and at the same time provides an extremely rigid support for the grinding wheel supported thereon.
Referring specifically to the drawing, two oppositely-faced, matched disk-type grinding wheels are designated respectively at Iii and I2. The grinding wheel It is carried on a mounting l4 formed on th enlarged end of a grinding wheel supporting inner sleeve l6, and is held rigidly in position thereon by means of a locking nut l8 which is screw-threaded to the enlarged end of the sleeve. The internal cylindrical surface of the sleeve to is flared outwardly at the enlarged end to form a taper 23 which mates with the correspondingly tapered end of a grinding wheel spindle 22 which is of usual construction. A tie rod extending axially within the sleeve it has a screw-threaded connection with the spindle 22, and is provided at its outer end with a locking nut 25 for engagement with the outer end of the sleeve It to hold the sleeve rigidly in position on the spindle 22.
The grinding wheel 12 is mounted on a grinding wheel outer sleeve member 28 which is carried on the inner sleeve member l6 above described. The grinding wheel i2 is secured in position on the outer sleeve member 23 between the flange 23 forming part of the sleeve and a clamping nut In accordance with a feature of the invention, the outer sleev 28 is construced and arranged with a nut portion 32 extending along a portion of the integral periphery thereof for screw-threaded, engagement with a screw thread 3 formed on the inner sleeve member it. Another portion of the internal periphery of the outer sleeve member 28 is cylindrical in form, and forms a bearing surface 33 for engagement with the outer peripheral surfaces of the screw thread 34. In order to obtain a tight sliding fit between the bearing surface 33 and the inner sleeve member iii, the outer peripheral surface of the screw thread 34 is ground or finished along its entire length to provide a true cylindrical bearing surface.
The outer sleeve member 28 and grinding wheel 12 are normally held rigidly in position on the in-- ner sleeve member by means of a ring looking member 35 which is supported to slide axially upon the finished peripheral surface of the screw thread 3% of the inner sleeve member i6, and is keyed against rotational movement thereon by means of a key 38 which engages in a keyway 40 on the inner sleeve member iii. A pair of clutch teeth 32 formed on the face of th ring locking member 36 are arranged for engagement with corresponding recesses M in the adjacent face of the outer sleeve member 28, to lock the outer sleeve member 28 and grinding wheel I2 against rotational movement with relation to the inner sleeve member It. A locking nut 45 screwthreaded in the sleeve I6 is arranged to act on the ring locking member 33 to lock the outer sleeve member 28 in its adjusted position and to rigidly clamp the parts together to turn as a single unit.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown, and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A grinding wheel sleeve assembly for use with a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel supporting spindle, which comprises a pair of grinding Wheels, a grinding wheel supporting inner sleeve member having a mounting for one of said grinding wheels and a screwthreaded portion finished to provide a true cylindrical bearing surface, a grinding wheel supporting outer sleeve member providing a mounting for the other of said grinding wheels having an internal cylindrical bearing surface portion sleeved to the finished bearing surface of the sleeve and an internal threaded portion mating with the screw threads of the inner sleeve member, and means for rigidly securing the sleeve members together in adjusted position.
2. A grinding wheel sleeve assembly for use with a grinding machine having a rotatable grinding wheel supporting spindle, which comprises a pair of grinding wheels, a grinding wheel supporting inner sleeve member having a mounting for one of said grinding wheels and a screwthreaded portion finished to provide a true cylindrical bearing surface, a grinding wheel supporting outer sleeve member providing a mounting for the other of said grindin wheels and having the internal periphery thereof formed with a screw-threaded nut portion mating with the threaded portion of the inner sleeve member, and a separate cylindrical bearing surface portion fitted for sliding engagement with the finished screw-threaded surface of the inner sleeve member, and means for rigidly securing the sleeve members in adjusted position comprising a ring locking member keyed to and slidable upon the inner sleeve member, said ring locking member and outer sleeve member having cooperating clutch faces formed thereon, and a locking nut screw-threaded to the inner sleeve member.
