Abstract
487,937. Screw propellers. COATS, J. S., and TROTMAN, E. W. Oct. 24, 1936, Nos. 28967 and 30073. [Class 114] A variable-pitch propeller has hollow blades each connected with the boss by a link which at its ends has pivoting axes oblique to the propeller axis, and each blade is extended beyond the axis into the opposite blade to provide a balance. A pivot 12 at the root of the hollow blade 11 is set obliquely and a link 13 connects it with an oblique pin 14 on the shaft 15, whilst another link 18 with a universal joint 20 connects the pivot 12 with a slide block 16 on an extension 17 of the shaft. As rotational speeds increase the blades tend to move out and at the same time alter in pitch due to the oblique setting of the pivots. The blades may be positively set by controlling the slider 16. Each blade is provided with an extension 21 which straddles the shaft and within the opposite blade has a fitting 24 connected by a chain 22 with a point 23 on that blade. The chain is fully extended when the blades are in their innermost position and the centrifugal force thereon is taken by the blade to which it is attached directly. As speed increases the blades move out and links of the chain pile up step-by-step in the part 24 adding their effect to the one blade and deducting from the other.
