Abstract

<PICT:0487785/III/1> Catalysts which have become contaminated with carbon &c. in the catalytic treatment of hydrocarbons are regnerated by means of an oxygen-containing gas under superatmospheric pressure, e.g. of 40-100 lb. per sq. in. absolute pressure. The oxygen content of the gas may be regulated to control the temperature of the regeneration. A suitable gas may be obtained by the combustion in a chamber 8 of fuel and air supplied under pressure by pumps 9, 11 respectively, further air being optionally added to the combustion products at 13. The gas is passed through the catalyst chamber 1 which may be provided with heating or cooling means (not shown), e.g. as described in Specification 471,931. The products may be mixed with more air by pipe 15 and passed to a catalyst chamber 6 wherein carbon monoxide is oxidized to dioxide. The energy of the resulting gas may be utilized in a turbine or steam boiler 16 to supply, e.g. by means of an electric generator 18 and motor 19, the motive power for compressing the initial gas. In a modification, a part of the gas leaving the converter 1 is passed through a heat-exchanger and recycled through the converter. In another modification, the single converter 1 is replaced by a battery of converters which are placed on stream and on regeneration in sequence. The catalyst to be regenerated may be of the type described in Specification 416,025.
