487,415. Sound directing appliances. BARR & STROUD, Ltd., and FRENCH, J. W. Dec. 29, 1936, No. 35586. [Class 13] A sound-locating device comprises a paraboloidal horn A for receiving and concentrating sound, a sound-transmitting tube B and a diaphragm C of variable aperture at the junction of the horn A and tube B. To obtain the approximate direction of the sound source, the device is utilized with the aperture D fully opened and its position is varied until the sound intensity appears to be at a maximum. The aperture D is then reduced, as indicated in Fig. 4, and the device is adjusted until the sound is again at its maximum intensity, i.e. is concentrated at the reduced aperture D. The diaphragm C, which is preferably of the iris type, may be located above, below, or at the focal plane of the horn A.
