Abstract

A mixture of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkylamines containing not more than 3 carbon atoms is separated by treatment with a quantity of mineral acid stoichiometrically equivalent to the secondary amine present and any other amine having a dissociation constant larger than 60 per cent of that of the secondary amine, and separating the uncombined bases. A mixture of the methylamines may be treated with mineral acid equivalent to the mono- and dimethylamines, and the uncombined trimethylamine boiled out. The remaining salts may be separated by extraction with chloroform. Alternatively, monomethylamine can be separated by distillation, and the residue treated with acid equivalent to the dimethylamine. In the case of ethyl or propyl amines, sufficient acid to combine with the secondary amine is added, and the others removed. They can then be separated by fractional distillation. Specification 486,821 is referred to.
