Abstract
532,258. Mono- and dimethyl formamides. TYERMAN, W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 19, 1939, No. 21015. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] Mono- and di-methyl formamides are made from a mixture containing mono-, di- and trimethylamines by heating the mixture with methyl formate in an amount less than that stoichiometrically equivalent to the mono- and di-methylamines. The invention is particularly applicable to the mixture of methylamines and residual ammonia obtained by reacting ammonia with methanol. The mixture is treated with methyl formate in amount insufficient to react with all the mono- and di-methylamines, and the resulting mono- and di-methyl formamides are separated out by cooling, while the unchanged methylamines and ammonia may be returned to the first stage of the process to reduce the formation of trimethylamine in this stage. An example and diagrammatic lay-out of plant is given. The process may be used as a step in the preparation of pure mono- and dimethylamines from mixtures of methylamines, the formamides being separated by distillation and converted into the pure methylamines by hydrolysis.
