Abstract
486,759. Propelling aircraft. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and RADCLIFFE, J. M. Nov. 2, 1936, No. 29805. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVII] A method of charging a supercharged internalcombustion engine, for aircraft, consists in heating the charge by compressing it to a pressure in excess of the pressure at which it is ultimately fed to the engine, passing the heated and compressed charge through a cooler, expanding the charge after it leaves the cooler to reduce its pressure to the desired supercharging pressure and thereby reduce its temperature still further, and then feeding the charge to the engine. An aero-engine 14 drives an air-compressor 20 having an intake 21 arranged below and near the front of the wing. Air is discharged from the compressor through a heat-exchange device 22 constructed as a radiator extending below the wing. Air passes from the device 22 through a conduit 23 to an expansion-nozzle 24 disposed in a chamber 25 formed in a pipe 18 connecting the engine carburetter with a perforated panel in the upper surface of the wing. Due to the extractor effect of nozzle 24 and chamber 25 air is drawn through the panel and supplied under pressure to the carburetter. The panel may comprise holes one sixty-fourth inch diameter and one quarter-inch pitch. The cooling radiator is designed to give minimum drag and may assist propulsion of the aircraft. The intake 21 may be dispensed with, the compressor drawing air through the panel. The compressor may replace the engine supercharger.
