[Class 59] [Also in Groups VIII and V] Plants containing medulla, e.g. Indian corn stalks, are disintegrated dry, e.g. in a stamping mill, fed into a hopper supplying a graduated succession of cylindrical screen sections, each feeding through a hopper 7 a conveyer band 8. Air from slots along each side of a pipe 11 above each band 8 blows the medulla particles 20 towards the sides of the band 8 whence they collect through hoppers 16, 18, the fibres passing between adjustable guide plates 15 into a hopper 17. The medulla may be further cleaned as by flotation and boiling. It may be compressed for transport or storage and loosened mechanically and by steaming or boiling before use. The medulla may be mixed with casein, cement, resin, bitumen, glue, paper pulp, fillers, &c. and moulded into heat or sound insulation bricks or used as a substitute for cork in linoleum. The medulla or the products made therefrom may be treated with copper sulphate, tar products, formaldehyde, paraffin, resin soaps, &c.
