Abstract

486,575. Moulding concrete beams &c. BATES, H. K. Nov. 6, 1937, No. 30474. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A pre-cast building unit comprises a reinforced-concrete beam of channel-section and a closure slab subsequently cast to and closing the open face of the beam and spaced from the table thereof to form an air cavity, sheeting being located in the open face of the beam, after the beam has been cast, to support the closure slab during casting thereof. The beam 10 is of inverted-channel-section and the side flanges 14 and.ends 13 are formed near their outer ends with recesses 15 and holes 16. After the beam has been cast, it is inverted from the position shown so that it rests on the table portion 19, and sheeting 20 consisting of thin sheet metal, timber, &c. is fitted into the recesses in the sides and ends of the beam. Reinforcing rods 21, 22 are supported at their ends in the holes 16. The concrete, plaster, &c. slab 23 is then cast around the reinforcing members so as to close the open face of the channel, the outer face 24 of the slab being finished off flush with the outer faces of the flanges 14. The depth of the slab 23 is less than one-third the depth of the table 19 so that a substantial air space 25 is provided within the beam.
