Abstract

486,372. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 30, 1937, No. 21191. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1936. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In a thermionic amplifier automatic gain control is effected by an unbalanced coupling network R1 .. R4 the unbalance of which is varied by one or more variable impedances shunting one or more of the arms of the network. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the output of valve V1 is applied to one diagonal of the network and the input to the valve V2 is taken from the other diagonal of the network. A valve V4 is shunted across the arm R4 and its impedance is varied by rectified signal voltage. Two opposite branches of the bridge may be shunted by valves acting as variable impedances and the impedance variation may be according to any desired law. Alternatively the variable impedance may be a coil with a variably magnetized core.
