Abstract

485,523. Steam traps. GERDTS, G. F. Oct. 6, 1937, No. 27088. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1936. [Class 64 (ii)] Direct communication between the valve e and the steam space t of a float-operated steam trap is prevented by an enclosing chamber m having a horizontally extended opening o considerably larger than the discharge passage g of the valve and arranged with its upper edge p below the lowest water level. The valve is controlled by a rock-shaft v operable by the lever arm d of the float, which arm may be outside the chamber m or, as in a modification, inside the chamber when it is bent to form an elbow located in the opening o. In the latter modification, the side walls of the chamber m, Fig. 5, may be common with the side walls of the trap and inspection windows z may be provided therein. In a further modi. fication, the valve comprises a slotted slide el, Fig. 9, moving between slotted guide plates f<1>, the slots registering in the open position of the valve. The slide is reciprocated by the float through the medium of the lever arm d and a slotted arm d<1>. 1. The slight vortex formed above the valve may be broken by covering the valve inlet with a cage z<3> containing balls, or with a fan-shape distributer, or with a horizontal sieve.
