Abstract

484,795. Pile fabrics. STEPHENS, A. J. (Collins & Aikman Corporation) Oct. 5, 1936, No. 27003. [Class 142 (iv)] Groups of pile warp threads say two, 3, 8, pass through each reed space whereby spaced groups, each comprising two rows of pile tuft 19, Fig. III, are formed. The fabric may be woven in a double plush loom, ground warp threads 2, 5, 7, 10 for the upper fabric and warp threads 1, 4, 6, 9 for the lower fabric, in addition to the pile warp threads 3, 8 passing through each reed space and interweaving as shown. At each side of each tuft, a ground warp thread passes over the weft which the tuft passes under and thus supports it whilst the legs of each pile loop are supported by sections of adjacent wefts having no pile thereon. The tufts are staggered and slightly inclined, but the pile face appears uniform. The backing of the fabric is impregnated through the back with an adhesive binder material which does not fill the interstices between the threads but is confined to the backing and adjacent parts of the tufts as shown in Fig. XI so that the ventilating properties of the fabric are not destroyed. The binder material may comprise latex, artificial dispersions of rubber or synthetic rubber. To remove or neutralize water repellent matter such as wax, grease, &c. the fabric before impregnation may be treated locally or generally with soap, ammonia, or oil solvents, such as ethylene dichloride trichlorethane, carbon tetrachloride or emulsified with water. Reference is also made to treatment with sodium oleate and trisodium phosphate solution. When it is undesirable to wet the fabric, for example if it contains predyed yarns it is treated with fuller's earth or other absorbent clay or chemically treated silicate. If diethylene glycol has been added to the fibres of the fabric during the spinning &c., it is removed by treatment with water. Apparatus for scouring the fabric &c. and then impregnating it is described. The fabric may have cotton wefts and backing warps, and pile warps of a mixture 50 per cent wool and 50 per cent mohair or a blend of 10 per cent cellulose acetate, 45 per cent wool and 45 per cent mohair. The fabric may be used for automobile upholstery. Specification 484,792 is referred to.
