Abstract

484,216. Rack steering - gear for vehicles. STEYR-DAIMLER-PUCH AKT.- GES. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30324. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1935. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 8, 1937.] [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] In rack steering-gear the rack is mounted in bearing supports on each side of the pinion engaging the rack so as to be displaceable in the direction of its longitudinal axis, and resilient means are provided for maintaining the rack and pinion in engagement. Either the rack or pinion or both may be resiliently mounted. In the construction shown in the Figure, a pinion 3 engages a rack 1 slidably supported by rubber bushes 2, the pinion shaft 8 being mounted in fixed bearings. Modifications are described in which (1) the pinion shaft is mounted in rubber bushes, and (2) the pinion or the rack is urged towards the rack or the pinion by an adjustable spring.
