Abstract
Water, sewage, &c. are disinfected and purified by treatment with nascent chlorine produced from a hypochlorite and an alum. The reaction product obtained by mixing a solution of bleaching powder or sodium hypochlorite with a solution of an alkali or ammonium alum may be incorporated with the liquid. The reaction solution may be introduced into the water in a stream of water as by means of a Venturi tube, or by force pumps or gravity or by compressed air, nitrogen or oxygen acting upon the surface of the solution. When it is desired to treat the liquid with chloramine as well as with chlorine reaction products of bleaching powder with common alum and of bleaching powder with ammonium alum may both be added.
