Abstract

<PICT:0483076/III/1> <PICT:0483076/III/2> Apparatus for effecting a transfer of substance by absorption between a fluid and surfaces over which it flows, or the transfer of substance from one fluid to another by diffusion through separating partitions comprises a pile or pack of alternate flat and nonflat, preferably corrugated, partitions some or all of which permit of the transfer, and between which the fluid flows. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for separating water from a stream of oil comprising a pile of felt or other absorbent partitions impregnated with a hygroscopic salt. Apparatus applicable for drying or moistening air and for diffusing a constituent of another fluid into the air comprises absorbent sheets 3, Fig. 3, enclosed by corrugated sheets 6 separated from one another by flat sheets 7 of metal foil. The fluid from which a constituent is to be diffused is passed through the channels between the sheets 6 and 7.
