Abstract

482,461. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 30, 1936, No. 29557. Convention date, Jan. 23. [Class 39 (i)] A valve of small size has a cathode surrounded by and spaced from an independentlysupported grid at a distance of 0À005 to 0À01 inch, and insulating material is provided on one or both ends of the cathode to prevent conductive contact between the cathode and grid, should those electrodes come into mechanical contact. As shown in Fig. 5, ceramic collars 36, 37 or rings of oxide of magnesium, aluminium or beryllium are mounted on the ends of an indirectly-heated cathode 23, the diameter of the collars being slightly less than the internal diameter of the helical grid 13. The cathode core wire 16, forming a connection to the cathode and one end of the heater, is supported on a lead 24, Fig. 1, extending at rightangles to the cathode and sealed through the envelope, which has a diameter of one-half inch. A vertical lead 27 is connected with the other end of the heater. The grid 13 is welded to a wire 25 connected with a lead 26 at rightangles with the line 25 and the cathode lead 24. A screen grid 14 consists of a helical wire mounted on two rods 28, 29 in the plane of the grid wire 25 and the cathode core wire 16, the rod 28 being mounted on a lead 30 sealed at right-angles with the lead 26 and in line with the lead 24. The anode 12 is supported by a lead 33 sealed through the other end of the envelope. A helical wire suppressor grid 15 is connected with the cathode lead 24 and carries a metal screening disc 34. A shield 35 of smaller diameter is mounted on the other end of the suppressor grid. Dimensions are given. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the leads for the cathode and grids are sealed through one end of the envelope and arranged parallel with each other, and the larger screen is flanged and attached by tabs to the supports. A lead connected with this screen is sealed through the side of the envelope.
