Abstract

482,255. Hinges. BRIGGS MOTOR BODIES, Ltd., and WARD, D. L. Sept. 16, 1937, No. 25182. [Class 65 (ii)] A hinge for a drop-down door, such as for a vehicle luggage compartment, avoiding the need for stays or other additional support in the open position, comprises a set of short and long links arranged as shown, the links 5, 8 being pivoted to a plate 7 on the body, the links 11, 12 to the door, and pivotal connections being provided between the links 5 and 12, 8 and 11, and 8 and 12, the axes of all the pivots being substantially horizontal and the arrangement being such that in the open position two of the links 5, 11 are in overlapping abutting engagement over a considerable portion of their length with the other links 8, 12 to provide a rigid support for the door. To prevent sideways movement of the hinge parts, the links are arranged to fit closely againts the attachment plates, and a plate 18 may be fixed or formed on one or more of the links to engage the face of the adjacent link or links. The door may be locked in the open position by a finger screw or sliding pin on one of the links adapted to engage one of the attachment plates or an adjacent link.
